Data theft via NFC radio: Protect your data with RFID
Data theft via NFC radio: Protect your data immediately
Cashless payments are a blessing and make shopping easier. Over four million credit cards are already equipped with NFC (Near Field Communication) radio technology, which makes it possible to make cashless purchases.
However, hardly anyone uses these positive properties of the cards and therefore very few people know that the card is constantly transmitting radio signals and information.
The problem:
The data on the card can be easily read. According to the consumer advice center, “an impossibility” and the police speak of a “new variant of crime that is even more difficult to prosecute than all previously known tricks.”
Because customers often ask us why our wallets and passport holders are equipped with an RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) blocker and what that actually means, we will try to briefly summarize the topic and the problem for you.
How can someone get my data?
Reading out this information is very easy. Combined with simple programs, anyone can read your data using a standard smartphone or RFID scanner. It is enough to hold the device at a short distance from the card and the data can be read out immediately. So if you have your credit card in your wallet, pants or backpack, a data thief can grab the data in passing. It can happen that you are robbed on the bus, in the supermarket or at a concert without you even knowing.
What can be read?
The card number and expiry date of your credit card are read. In some cases, even the transaction history can be read.
In addition, with the appropriate technology, amounts under €25 are debited directly, as no further verification is necessary for amounts under €25.
What can be done with it?
With the help of the card number and the expiry date, the data thieves can make purchases at your expense in numerous online shops such as Amazon.de.
A real name or the check digit are not required or checked.
How can I protect myself?
- If you do not use your credit card for cashless payments, we recommend exchanging your card at your bank for a credit card without a radio chip
- Another slightly more complicated option is to wrap each card in aluminum foil
- an RFID protective cover in which to store the card
- The easiest way to protect yourself is with a shielded wallet with an RFID blocker like the KAVAJ wallets. These protect the cards from being read, but are quickly at hand for cashless payments

A great wallet - nice and flat, not bulky, can be worn loosely in shorts. Sometimes you don't even notice that you have a wallet with you.
